France 500s (Merovingian dynasty)

Description

Frankish women from 6th century.

Franks were a Germanic tribe, that migrated to Gaul somewhere in the 5th century. Somewhere in the middle of the century, a Merovingian dynasty was formed and it ruled the Franks until 752.

Both women wear knee long tunics with longer, front-opened overgowns, that are closing with brooches and/or a belt. They cover their heads with long, colorful veils. They also wear hose, with decorative garters.

Disclaimer! Just as back in 400s (tadarida.deviantart.com/art/Fr…) please bear in mind, that there's limited resources for the centuries of Merovingian dynasty and therefore the outfit cannot be 100% (or even 75%) accurate. I tried to base it on stuff found in Arnegunde's tomb + people's reimaginations of it + little bit of Byzantine influence

Thank you for this. While it is quite easy to find information about fashion in Classical Antiquity and the High to Late Middle Ages, Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages seem to be very underprioritized among historians, archeologists, movie makers and the like. This is a pity, since I think it is one of the most fascinating periods in European history. In short, I appreciate you doing images like this.
