Italy 1420

Description

Clothes of 15th century Italy were in a way similar to those of Western Europe, but had also some unique characteristic features. Women wore high waisted dresses with voluminous skirts, which could have tight or flaring sleeves, often dagged - pretty similar to the Burgundian gown. Differences begin with necklines, which were rather high rather than V-shaped. The biggest differences were the headdresses though. While the most fashionable headdress in Western Europe was a hennin, in Italy it was a balzo - a big, round headdress worn on the top of a head. Balzo was popular in the first half of the 15th century, then it dissapeared and reappeared in 1515-1540s (it was in a different shape though, closer to the head and sometimes smaller: tadarida.deviantart.com/art/Lo… or tadarida.deviantart.com/art/Fl… or tadarida.deviantart.com/art/Ve…).

So, the woman on right is wearing a burgundian gown with flaring and dagged sleeves, a short dagged cape and a balzo.
The woman on the left wears a dress with tighter sleeves and she wears a chaperone ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaperon… )  rather than a balzo.
