1720 Court

Description

In 1720s there was a distinction between comfortable, everyday wear ( tadarida.deviantart.com/art/17… ) and formal court wear.

Robes de cour appeared first during Louis XIV's reign and, with some modifications, were present for the following century. They had boned bodices with wide necklines. The bodice was cut separately from the skirt, was laced in the back and was worn with lacy sleeves. The skirt was worn over a small hoop until 1740s, when it was replaced by panniers.

Here's a court dress from 50 years before: tadarida.deviantart.com/art/16… - it's an old picture, but I think differences are visible. Different shape of the bodice, different sleeves and drapping of the skirt (and of course stuff like hairstyle). Still, the general idea prevails.

As for men, in the 20s they wore transition fashions between barocco and rococo. The wigs were smaller, and always powdered, but still more similar in shape to barocco hairstyles. The jackets were still functional - they could be buttoned up (not the case in later decades), waistcoats quite long, cuffs still very wide.
